Uganda Police says
so far 21 dead bodies have been retrieved from collapsed landfill
in Kiteezi, Kampala as rescue operations continue to recover more
bodies that might have been buried under the garbage. On Saturday, 10th July, collapse a
massive hill of garbage collapsed and buried over 12
homes resulting to death of 21 people. Kiteezi has been an area
where garbage from Kampala Metropolitan Area was always dumped since 1996.
Uganda Police
Spokesperson, Rusoke Kituma today told media at Police
headquarters Naguru Kampala that so far, 21 dead bodies have been recovered
from this debris. Among the deceased people
are Sam Kajubi, Meddy Mubiru, Shamon Muhammed,
Halima Nakalume Mulikedete Phiona, Mukadete (3 months
old), Kasule James, Mukose Emmanuel, Brenda Kawuki,
Sharon (housemaid to Brenda), Jessa Nantege, Whitney Nabulya (3
years old), Lwere Ronald (20 years) among others. Their bodies were
taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-morterm.
The operations are
being carried out by Uganda Police, the Ministry of Works, the
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), and the Red Cross and today, they
said rainfall has disrupted the process of rescuing.
President Yoweri Museveni via his X (formely Twitter)
directed the State House Comptroller to provide financial assistance to
the families of the deceased, ordering that shs5m be given to the
families of the deceased & shs 1m be given to the survivors
as compensation
