Police in Ibanda District have arrested 29 individuals in connection with the brutal killing of Police Constable Suleiman Chemonges, 28 during a burial ceremony in Ibanda Municipality.

Constable Chemonges, who was stationed at Bisheshe Police Post was on duty providing security during the burial of Lazarus Kahangire, an inmate who died at Nyabuhikye Government Prison. Kahangire had been on remand, facing charges of attempted murder related to a land dispute registered and he died while in prison.

According to SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, Constable Chemonges was deployed as part of routine security arrangements at the burial which descended into chaos under unclear circumstances.

He confirmed that 29 individuals have been arrested and police are still pursuing two others who sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.
