As Uganda prepares to join the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, leaders in Bushenyi district have praised the government for its efforts to uplift the lives of individuals with disabilities.
Douglas Mucunguzi, the LC5 male councilor representing Persons with Disabilities and the district speaker for Bushenyi, highlighted that through special grants, they have successfully supported over 35 groups each consisting of five members, with each group receiving Shs. 5 million.
Mucunguzi pointed out that various programs, including the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, have also benefitted people with disabilities. He noted that the government allocates 10% of PDM funds specifically for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to acquire essential working capital.
He urged parents not to discriminate against children with disabilities, emphasizing that advocating for their rights is everyone's responsibility. He also encouraged community mobilization to ensure that children with disabilities are included and that awareness is raised about their rights and needs.
Every December 3rd, Uganda alongside the international community, commemorates the day dedicated to persons with disabilities. This year's celebration will be held under the theme "Improved Household Income for the Wellbeing of Persons with Disabilities."
