Police in Buhweju District are investigating the circumstances surrounding a case of corporal punishment at St. Victor Secondary School in Katara.
Nagasha Moreen, a 16-year-old S.1 student, was reportedly beaten severely by the school's head teacher and staff members in the staff room under suspicion of theft. As a result of the alleged beating, Nagasha is currently unable to sit and is receiving treatment at Diisi Medical Clinic in Bwizibwera, Mbarara District. She denies all allegations against her.
Her father, Byabasheija Leonidas has called on government authorities to intervene, expressing concern for his daughter's critical condition and describing the punishment as brutal.
The head teacher, Kabagambe Benard has acknowledged awareness of the incident but claims that Nagasha was actually beaten by fellow students who accused her of stealing their belongings.
