Police
in Bushenyi have launched investigations into a fire that severely
damaged the boys' dormitory at Nyakabanga Senior Secondary School
in Kyabugimbi. The incident occurred around 5:30 AM on November 10, 2024,
destroying property valued at millions of shillings.
Martial Tumusiime,
the Spokesperson for Greater Bushenyi Police confirmed that the fire
broke out in Block E of the boys’ dormitory, which housed approximately 100
students from various classes. At the time of the fire, the students were attending
morning prep, which begins at 4:00 AM.
Bonny Barinyenka,
the school's head teacher and a resident of Nyakabanga B LC1
in Bijengye Parish reported the incident
to Kyabugimbi Police Station. He noted that the fire caused extensive
damage, including the loss of books, suitcases and other personal belongings.
Some
students, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed to have seen an unknown
individual dressed in a dark jacket and cape leaving the area while carrying a
small jerry can shortly before the flames erupted. Initially, they assumed this
person was a teacher searching for students who had skipped prep.
This
incident marks the second fire at Nyakabanga Senior Secondary School
in a short span; a previous fire had also ravaged a boys' dormitory on November
4, 2024, resulting in significant property loss. The police are actively
investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents.
