Lubaga Hospital has officially announced the passing of Muhammad Ssegirinya, 37, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North on National Unity Platform (NUP) party ticket. According to a statement from the hospital, Ssegirinya breathed his last today, January 9, 2025, at 12:10 PM.
Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya had been unwell for some time, receiving treatment in Nairobi, Kenya, and other medical facilities. Doctors in Nairobi had advised him to take a three-month period of rest and recovery, away from gatherings and activities.
Ssegirinya's health deteriorated following his release from prison, where he had spent nearly two years facing charges related to machete attacks in Greater Masaka alongside Hon. Allan Ssewanyana, the Member of Parliament for Makindye West.
After initially falling ill, he was transferred to medical facilities in Germany and the Netherlands before being admitted to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, where he received treatment for several months before returning to Uganda.
Earlier, when reports of Ssegirinya's death circulated, doctors at Lubaga Hospital refuted them, stating that he was in critical condition, with his organs having ceased functioning, although his heart remained active.
However, the hospital later confirmed his passing, releasing a statement that read: “Hon. Ssegirinya has been under the dedicated care of our medical team at Lubaga Hospital. Despite all efforts to ensure his recovery, he sadly passed away today, Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 12:10 PM.”
“On behalf of the hospital, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Parliament of Uganda, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, Honorable Members of Parliament, his family, and the people of Kawempe North, whom he represented with passion and commitment,” the statement added.
