High Court okays swearing in of new deputy president
The High
Court in Kenya has lifted the orders of blocking
Professor Kithure Kindiki to be sworn in as Kenya’s Deputy
President.
Prof. Kithure who is the current
interior Minister will be sworn in as Kenya’s Deputy President
following the recent impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua who
was the Deputy President.
Gachagua was impeached by two
houses of parliament that is, the National Assembly parlialament and
Senate. Gachangua was accused of being corrupt, being involved
protests in June 2024, when people were protesting of taxes, being involved in
politics of hate among other crimes.
Gachagua, 59, was impeached while he was
hospitalised and his lawyers went to High Court in need of blocking the
swearing in of Prof. Kithure who was appointed by President
William Ruto to replace Gachagua.
High Court blocked the swearing
in og Gachagua and today October 31st,
the High Court has lifted the orders it had issued blocking the
swearing-in of Prof Kindiki and he is expected to be sworn in as
Kenya’s Deputy President tomorrow.
In their decision, Justices Anthony Mrima,
Eric Ogola and Fredah Mugambi cited the need for
continuity of the deputy president’s office.
