Mbarara Authorities plan to use Katete Bridge unspent money to construct other bridges
Mbarara City Council authorities plan to allocate the unspent balance of 151 million shillings from the 517 million shillings earmarked for the rehabilitation of Katete Bridge to the construction of Kanyeyite and Taso-Kitebero Bridges. The council utilized 366 million shillings for the Katete Bridge project.
Bonny Tashobya Karusya, the Mbarara City Council Speaker confirmed that a resolution was passed in previous business committee meeting to use the remaining funds for the new bridges. During a yesterday's council session, Tashobya instructed the city town clerk and engineer to expedite the procurement of Bills of Quantities for both projects.
Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi reported that the council has sought permission from the Ministry of Works to utilize the balance and is awaiting a response.
However, council member Muhammad Byansi raised concerns about the rehabilitation costs of the Katete Bridge, questioning whether they align with the amount spent.
Town clerk Assy Abireebe acknowledged that materials stored in Kamukuzi for safekeeping had been stolen and has asked the security company responsible for the council property to replace them.
Byansi further requested a police reference number as proof that a case was reported regarding the theft. In response, Abireebe confirmed that the incident was reported, investigated, and resolved after the accused agreed to replace the stolen materials.
