Mayor Kakyebezi in trouble, Councilors threaten to impeach him
Mbarara City Councilors have threatened to impeach Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi for failing to convene an extraordinary meeting where they could seek clarification from the outgoing city town clerk, Assy Abireebe Tumwesigire. This threat follows a series of letters from the councilors, which they allege have been ignored by the town clerk, the mayor and the speaker.
In their most recent letter, dated January 15th, 2025, the councilors are demanding an extraordinary meeting before the now-transferred town clerk officially hands over office. Jessica Mwijuka, the councilor representing workers, expressed concern that the council could potentially lose a significant amount of money under circumstances that remain unclear to them.
Byansi Muhammad, the councilor representing Nyamityoobora emphasized that the councilors feel they have no other option but to pursue impeachment due to the mayor's perceived undermining of their authority.
In response, the city council speaker Bonny Tashobya Karusya urged the councilors to remain calm, reassuring them that a council meeting has already been scheduled for Wednesday this week, during which their concerns would be addressed.
Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi acknowledged receipt of the letters from the city councilors and stated that he has formally directed the city town clerk, in writing, to organize the requested extraordinary council meeting.
