Kampala Minister addresses reports of missing people in Kiteezi
The Minister of Kampala
Capital City Authority and Metropolitan
Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, addressed reports claiming that
28 people are missing after the collapse of the Kiteezi landfill.
She stated that those
asserting that 28 individuals are still unaccounted for are merely speculating,
as the official report from the Office of the Prime Minister indicates that
only 11 people are missing.
Minister Kabanda made
these remarks while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Commissions,
Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) alongside KCCA management
to respond to inquiries from the December 2023 Auditor General’s report on
waste management.
Hon Medard Sseggona,
the Busiro East MP, who is also the Chairperson of
Parliament’s Committee of Commissions, Statutory Authorities & State
Enterprises (COSASE) raised an issue saying that
President Yoweri Museveni had said that the residents had encroached
on the garbage land. Sseggona said when the committee
visited Kiteezi, they received a map from KCCA
indicating it is garbage that had encroached.
Responding to Hon Sseggona,
Minister Minsa Kabanda denied allegations that residents
around Kiteezi had encroached on the KCCA landfill, saying that the
residents had land titles and owned the land they occupied.
