Church leaders urged to promote income generation
President Yoweri Museveni has urged church leaders to collaborate with the government in promoting income generation and community social transformation emphasizing that a meaningful gospel should benefit both the body and spirit.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Minister for Security, Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi during the closing ceremony of a four-day retreat for Western Region Church of Uganda Bishops Fellowship at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyansano in North Kigezi Diocese in Rukungiri District, the president highlighted the Church's vital role in fostering unity and compassion.
He called on the Bishops to be greater shepherds who not only focus on spirituality but also prioritize economic empowerment. The President encouraged clergy to partner with the government in combating poverty, diseases, corruption, and moral decay to achieve social transformation.
Earlier, during the service concluding the fellowship, East Rwenzori Bishop Rt Rev George Turyasingura urged church leaders to embody humility and promote forgiveness.
The retreat was attended by 38 Bishops from 15 dioceses, including those from the regions of Bunyoro, Rwenzori, Ankole, and Kigezi. During the fellowship, the Bishops elected Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe of North Kigezi Diocese as the new chairperson, succeeding Amos Magezi of North West Ankole.
