Suspect from police custody drowns in water
Police in Rubirizi district are investigating circumstances surrounding the drowning death of 25-year-old Muhirwe Gerald, who escaped from police custody on April 18, 2025.
Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson SSP Martial Tumusiime confirmed the incident, stating that they were still conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding Gerald's escape and death.
According to police reports, Gerald was being transported to Rubirizi Police Station on charges of threatening violence against his parents and brothers. He managed to escape while being escorted by Officers PC Mutabaazi Johnmary and PC Okaka at the Kyambura River Bridge in Kirugu Sub County.
A search followed and locals recovered his body from the water on April 23, 2025, around 4 p.m. The body was sent to Rugazi Health Center IV mortuary for a post-mortem examination, which confirmed death by drowning.
Police have documented the crime scene and recorded witness statements. It is worth mentioning that Gerald had a history of drug addiction and had previously threatened his family and he had recently been released from prison on similar charges.
