Police in Mitooma district have arrested three chairpersons of Parish Development Model (PDM) Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) and are actively seeking additional suspects for allegedly extorting funds from PDM beneficiaries.
The arrested individuals include Benon Bagorogoza from Furuma Mutara Town Council, Justus Kamuza of Rurehe South PDM SACCO, and James Turyamureba of Kiyanga PDM SACCO. They were detained following a consultative meeting with beneficiaries in the Ruhinda South and Ruhinda North areas.
Umaru Muhanguzi, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Mitooma, who led the operation noted that while the three chairpersons were present at the meeting, the list of those wanted in connection with this matter is extensive, including parish chiefs and other SACCO leaders.
In a discussion with residents and parish chiefs at Bitereko Church of Uganda recently, Ronald Tibingana Kato, the Mitooma District Internal Security Officer, revealed that many parish chiefs exploit the lack of data to extort money from beneficiaries. He emphasized that these parish chiefs were provided with a facilitation of one hundred thousand shillings to address such issues.
Fred Kizito Mukasa, the Chief Administrative Officer of Mitooma District, stated that he has already interdicted several parish chiefs for their involvement in extortion. He affirmed that action will now extend to PDM SACCO chairpersons, who have been habitually engaging in these practices.
