Parliament to receive response on traders' strike
The State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, David Bahati has confirmed to Parliament that as the ministry, they will tomorrow update Parliament on steps taken by Government to resolve the issues of traders.
Shops across the nation are closed amid escalating tax concerns, with traders staging a nationwide sit-down strike, protesting against Electronic fiscal receipting and invoice solution (EFRIS) which is being put on them by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
Traders in Kampala, Luwero, Mityana among other areas have seen closing their shops in away of demonstrating and Security personnel and tear gas tanks have been deployed in certain areas of the city in response to the situation. According to the Chairman of Kampala Arcades Association-KATA Godfrey Katongole, they have closed their businesses after several attempts to discuss with the government have been futile. He added that they will close businesses until Friday when they anticipate meeting the President.
Politicians including FDC Najjanankumbi President Patrick Oboi Amurit and FDC Katonga's Dr. Kiiza Besigye noted that they will join these traders in their strike protesting what they referred to as a bad taxation regime.
In Parliament presided over by Speaker Anita Among today, Legislators demanded the government's response about this strike from traders and in response, the State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, David Bahati said that as the ministry, they will tomorrow, April 17th, update Parliament on steps taken by Government to resolve the issues of traders.
