At least 13 protesters were killed yesterday during protests in Kenya. Protesters were demonstrating against new tax proposals on bread, Pads, matchboxes among other items.
An angry crowd broke through police lines, stormed parliament in capital Nairobi before setting parts of it ablaze and Ugandan House was also affected when it was set ablaze.
Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital say over 160 people were receiving treatment from injuries they sustained in demonstrations as police tried to fight with demonstrators.
Â
Police had to spray teargas to protesters,
opened fire as a way of fighting demonstrations from escalating. In his address
to the nation, Kenya’s President William Ruto described an act by protesters
who broke into parliament, setting parts of the complex on fire, stealing the
ceremonial mace, (symbolising the authority of the legislature), as a terrorism
act.
Â
The President noted that security will
have to continue fighting protesters who involve in acts aimed at destabilising
the country.
