The Traffic Office in Bushenyi District has expressed concern over the rising number of road accidents in the area. Joachim Mugumya Baruku, the district traffic officer reported that 70% of the road accidents registered each month are caused by boda-boda riders.
The district records approximately 25 road accident cases monthly, with five being fatal, thirteen serious and five minor and most of these incidents involve boda-boda riders.
Baruku made these comments during a road safety campaign organized by the Lions Club of Bushenyi aimed at raising awareness and reducing the number of fatalities on the roads.
Lions Club District Governor Benon Kataate emphasized that many road accidents are preventable if road users, particularly boda-boda riders adhere to traffic signs and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
Alice Kamusiime, president of the Lions Club of Bushenyi, stated their commitment to promoting road safety through educating all road users about the importance of obeying traffic signs to decrease the number of fatalities on Ugandan roads.
A recent traffic accident report indicated that a total of 432 accidents were recorded, of which 97 were fatal, 202 serious, and 133 minor. The report also revealed that 100 people lost their lives, while 324 sustained injuries.
