Ibanda teacher losses eye from attack, opts for early retirement
A teacher in Ibanda District has been attacked and in the process, he lost one eye and suffered a deep head.
The attacked, Alphonse Arinaitwe, 51, a resident of Bwenda in Rukiri sub-count and a teacher at Mpasha Primary School in Rukiri sub-county Ibanda South County, is currently on sick leave and has opted for early retirement. He was allegedly attacked by a one Wilson Ayesiga Kasimari, a charcoal burner, as he returned home from the nearby trading centre.
Kasimari is currently facing attempted murder and robbery charges before the Ibamda chief magistrate’s court, for allegedly attacking Arinaitwe and trying to steal his bicycle on the night of May 16.
While testifying against him on September 26, prosecution witness John Fisher Byamukama told court presided over by Her Worship Winfred Naigaga Kyobiika, that he found the victim laying unconscious by the roadside at Kyangwahanda on May 17. He said that he called some residents who helped him to rush Arinaitwe to Uganda Martyrs Hospital Ibanda for treatment.
He was later referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where he was admitted for over a month, but the medics could not restore his left eye’s sight. Arinaitwe confirmed that he has already applied for early retirement given his current health situation. The hearing of prosecution witnesses continues on October 24.
