LC1 elections postponed again
Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi has confirmed that the government has decided to extend the term of office for Local Council One leaders for another 180 days.
According to Minister Magyezi, the extension comes up as the Ministry of Finance failed to provide money amounting to Shs.50Bn to Electoral Commission to organize these elections.
The Minister made the remarks during a media interview at Parliament, where he noted that the current term of office of these LC 1 current leaders was set to elapse today but it has been extended for another 180 days.
This has sparked mixed reactions from MPs who wanted these elections. Kumi Municipality MP Silas Aogon wondered why the Government can fail to organize elections for LC1s yet these would require resources for printing ballot papers as the mode of voting will be strictly lining up.
According to MP Aogon, this shows that Uganda is a lazy country that doesn’t want to prioritize major things. He questioned why the government have continuously extended the term of office of LCIs.
