Police disperse Leader of Opposition, Residents
Police together with the Army have blocked the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon Joel Ssenyonyi from touring the Lubigi wetland site. Hon Ssenyonyi today was to tour Lubigi wetland where National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) recently demolished homes and other structures of residents that were illegally occupying this Lubigi wetland the act that has been criticized.
Ssenyonyi before being blocked, told residents that he told the NEMA Executive Director that there is a lot of destruction that has taken place asking him to allow them (as leaders) to hold a meeting with local leaders around Lubigi, representatives from the people who have been evicted, however he said the meeting has not been held.
Ssenyonyi later moved to start touring the wetland but Police and the Army blocked him and the two groups engaged in an exchange. Security personnel fired live bullets and teargas to disperse residents who were protesting Police’s actions of blocking Ssenyonyi from touring the wreckage (wetland).
