Police in Bushenyi District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 24-year-old woman who allegedly poisoned herself.
Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that the incident occurred yesterday January 25th and identified the deceased as Janet Tunyumize, a resident of Kabira in Mitooma District.
According to Tumusiime, the situation was reported by William Ssenge, an officer attached to Bushenyi Police Station who rushed to Bushenyi Medical Center in Byatoogo Cell, Central Division of Bushenyi Municipality, where Tunyumize was pronounced dead.
It is alleged that Tunyumize, who was in a relationship with Ssenge, arrived at his place on January 24, 2025, and spent the night there. The following morning, on January 25, 2025, the two had a disagreement after Tunyumize suspected her boyfriend of being involved with other women and after the argument, she left for Bushenyi town, only to return shortly afterward and enter the room, leaving Ssenge outside.
The officer later followed her inside and found Tunyumize unconscious, having vomited a foul-smelling substance that appeared to be poison. He immediately transported her to Bushenyi Medical Center for medical attention, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The body has been transferred to KIU Teaching Hospital in Ishaka for a postmortem examination. Prior to her death, Tunyumize reportedly informed a doctor that she had taken poison but did not give a reason for her actions.
