Police Officer to spend 4 years in prison over drug theft
The Chief Magistrate’s Court in
Kyenjojo district has sentenced a police officer to 4 years in jail after
convicting him of stealing government drugs.
AIP Kule Yusuf was arrested in
September last year together with 6 others during an operation against
government drug thefts led by the National Drug Authority.
The suspects were charged with
stealing government drugs including ARVs, antimalarial among others and selling
them in the neighbouring Democratic republic of Congo.
The other 6 pleaded guilty and were
sentenced to jail terms ranging between 3 – 6 years.
Passing the sentence against Kule at
Kyenjojo Chief Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Gloria Aciba Nimungu said the 11
months Kule has spent on remand should be counted as part of his sentence hence
sentencing him to 3 years and month 1.
Abiaz Rwamwiri, the Public Relations
Officer, National Drug Authority welcomed the sentence saying it will deter
other people with similar intentions.
