Sheema Authorities meet over Foot and Mouth Disease, partially uplifts quarantine
Sheema District Foot and Mouth Disease Task Force
has partially lifted the Foot and Mouth Disease quarantine nearly a month that
was instituted to contain the spread.
The commissioner of Animal Health Dr.Annah Rose
Adenum, on February 7th, imposed a total quarantine on both livestock and
livestock products in Sheema district following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth
disease and eversince, the authorities together with people in the district
have been implementing control measures including the ban on moving and selling
of live stock and their products.
According to the statistics from Sheema District
Veterinary Department, 569 cattle have recovered from foot and mouth disease,
94 are still under treatment while 14 have been confirmed dead. This was said
during the meeting held on March 4th,at the district council hall that was
attended by all LC3 Chairpersons, sub-county and town council veterinary
officers, live stock traders and farmers.
Dr.Amanya Joseph, the Sheema District veterinary officer, noted that they have only uplifted the quarantine in disease free areas while other areas with the disease, the quarantine guidelines continue.These include; Rugarama, Masheruka, Kiziba ward, Karera South and North as well as Rushozi ward.
