Speaker demands government response on Lubigi evictions
Speaker Anita
Among has condemned Police, Army for blocking the Leader of Opposition,
Joel Ssenyonyi from accessing Lubigi wetland site.
On Monday June 17th,
Hon Ssenyonyi together with his team were to tour the
Lubigi wetland site following the complaints from residents in that
wetland. The complaints arose from the a decision in which National
Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) demolished homes and other structures
of residents that were illegally occupying Lubigi wetland.
In Parliament
today, Leader of Opposition Ssenyonyi said that residents and local
leaders approached him with a petition requesting him to raise their
matter in Parliament. Ssenyonyi said he decided to first visit the
area, speak to residents to get relevant information but he said, he was
surprised that he and the team met teargas,
live ammunitions from police and the Army who blocked them from
accessing the wetland site.
Ssenyonyi demanded
explanation from government on why NEMA decided to leave a Police Station and
Petrol Station there and had to demolish other residents’ houses and
structures.
Speaker Anita
Among Speaker Anita Among condemned the manner in which Police and
Army blocked Leader of Opposition Ssenyonyi and
his team and wondered why NEMA had to only evict residents in Lubigi,
yet there are several malls built in wetlands and these haven’t been erased as
was the case with the houses and businesses in Lubigi. Speaker Among demanded
an explanation from Government describing the manner of blocking
leaders as unfortunate and uncalled for. Parliament Session was adjourned before government leaders could respond to this matter.
