Teargas in Mbarara as Boda Boda riders Protest

Police in Mbarara city fired teargas to disperse rowdy Boda Boda riders protesting the move by City Council that requires who told the cyclists to hold their structural leadership elections through electoral colleges.

The protest comes after the City Council last week launched an electoral road map to choose boda-boda city leaders, which some boda-boda operators led by Sadious Oukunda challenged saying college elections are not in line with their constitution.

Addressing angry boda boda operators, the Mbarara Resident City Commissioner, Capt.James Mwesigye warned them against further protests, threatening strong action if they continue.

A team of police officers led by Mbarara Central Police Station Officer in Charge of operations, ASP Swizin Tibesigwa, intercepted the riders, used teargas to disperse them. ASP Tibesigwa says they had to intervene to stop the riders for defying police instructions against holding a procession and asked them to use court if the City Council failed to sort out their issues.
